The worker bee has been the city of Manchester’s official symbol for decades - dating back to the 19th century. It was adopted during the Industrial Revolution, when Manchester became the world’s first industrial city. Throughout the Industrial Revolution, Manchester was described as a ‘hive’ of activity and the workers as ‘busy bees’. The worker bee symbolises Manchester's busy city and the hard working ethic that is synonymous with Mancunians.

Across the city, the worker bee makes appearances on everything from bins and lampposts to wall murals and floor mosaics.

Here at Unibox, we’re Manchester-based so felt it would only be fitting to celebrate the city's past and design a Manchester bee. We combined the city's symbol and our lighting design capabilities to create a Neonist worker bee.

Neonist is our modern LED alternative to Neon. Constructed using solid acrylic lettering, Neonist uses laser CNC- etching processers to create custom letters and shapes. It gives the glamour and eye catching qualities of tradition neon but without the fragility. Find out more about Neonist here.

Lux Live 2017

We recently exhibited at Lux Live 2017 in London, which brings together some of the world’s finest designers, suppliers and manufacturers. We decided to take our Manchester Bee along with us, as a show of strength for northern manufacturing, with it taking pride of place on our stand.
